Obituary

Vivian Elizabeth Clarissa Palmer-Washington, aged 99, passed away on July 20, 2025, in New Orleans, Louisiana, at the home of her daughter, Mary Elizabeth Crooks. Born in Sumrall, Mississippi, she was the beloved daughter of the late Ulysses (Y.E.) and Mary Nelson-Palmer. Vivian spent her early years in Sumrall with her grandmother, Ada Elizabeth Baker, before moving to Picayune, Mississippi, where she lived for 91 years.

Vivian was married to Cornelius Washington for 75 years until his passing in 2019. Together, they raised six children: Robert Lee, Cornelius Jr., Barbra Nell, Mary Elizabeth, Johnnie Edward, and Arbra Ann. She was a devoted mother and grandmother, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

She pursued her education at Picayune Colored Schools and later obtained her GED in 1966. Throughout her life, Vivian worked in various roles, including as a maid, machine operator, baker, and poll manager. She was a talented homemaker who enjoyed sewing, cooking, and gardening.

Vivian was a dedicated member of the Greater Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church in Picayune for over 91 years. She taught Sunday School and led the church's Starlight Band for more than 40 years, touching the lives of many in her community.

Preceded in death by her parents, husband, two sons, a brother, two sisters, a grandson, and three great-grandchildren, Vivian is survived by her son, Cornelius Washington, Jr., her daughters, Barbara Cockerham, Mary Crooks, and Arbra Powell, eighteen grandchildren, and 'like' daughters, Lecrease Hicks, Mary Louise Smith, and Elsie Wright, along with numerous relatives and friends.

Funeral services will be held at the Greater Pleasant Valley Missionary Baptist Church, 501 Weems Street, Picayune, Mississippi 39466, on Saturday, August 2nd. Visitation will be from 10:00am to 11:00am, followed by the funeral service at 11:00am. A repast gathering will follow the burial in the Eight Street Cemetery in Picayune, MS 39466.
