It is with deep sorrow that we announce the passing of Mr. Archie McGill, age 86, of Poplarville, Mississippi, who passed away on December 13, 2025, at his home. Born on January 7, 1939, he was a lifelong resident of Poplarville, Mississippi. Archie was a devoted member of Merrill Chapel United Methodist Church, where he served in various leadership roles, including Sunday School Superintendent, council on ministry chairperson, and trustee board member. He was instrumental in guiding the church's mission and vision.
Archie pursued higher education at Alcorn State University, earning Bachelor's degrees in both Elementary Education and Agricultural. He dedicated 40 years of his life to educating young minds in the Poplarville School District, retiring as an esteemed elementary school teacher. His commitment to education was recognized when he was named a finalist for the Mississippi Hall of Master Teachers, a testament to his impact on countless students.
He said, "I feel that it is a great and imponderable honor to be selected as a Master Teacher finalist. It is a symbol of glory that is bestowed upon me for helping some child come out of the darkness into the glorious sunlight of tomorrow."
Archie is survived by his son's mother, Irma F. Christian; his son, Patrick Christian Sr. (Kimberly) of Brandon, Mississippi; two grandsons, Patrick Christian Jr. (Breanna) of Pearl, Mississippi, and Troy Christian of Brandon, Mississippi, along with Corey Christian; two great-granddaughters, Leah Christian and Layla Christian; his brother, Bobby McGill (Melinda); and a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Archie McGill Sr. and Lula Mae McGill; three brothers, Billy Ray McGill, James McGill, and Henry McGill; and two sisters, Shirley Collier and Betty Tillman.
The Funeral Service will be held on Friday, December 19, 2025, beginning at 11:00 a.m., with Visitation Hours from 10:00 a.m. until 10:55 a.m. at Hart Chapel Baptist Church. Burial will follow at Rose Park Cemetery, Poplarville, Mississippi, under the direction of Baylous Funeral Home.
